Animal control officers confiscate numerous animals in Riverside County; owners under suspicion of animal cruelty

In a shocking case of animal neglect, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies and animal control officers recently served a search warrant at a ranch in Cabazon, California. The officers seized more than 60 animals that were allegedly neglected by their owners. The two owners of the property, located in the 50000 block of Esperanza Avenue, were arrested on suspicion of felony animal cruelty.

According to Lt. Lesley Huennekens with Riverside County Animal Services, the animals, which included six horses, 10 dogs, and over 40 chickens and hens, were found in deplorable conditions. Many of the horses appeared emaciated, and several animals did not have access to proper food and water. Huennekens stated that during their initial visit to the property in July, they offered to help the owner improve the animals‘ living conditions, but he refused their assistance.

Huennekens expressed concern over the extreme heat in the region, with temperatures soaring over 100 degrees. She mentioned that some animals were found without water, or the water available was not suitable for consumption. The situation was dire, and action needed to be taken to ensure the animals‘ well-being.

Despite efforts to work with the owner to address the issues, the situation did not improve, leading to the seizure of the animals and the arrest of the owners. Huennekens noted that it is never their first response to seize animals, but in cases of severe neglect, it becomes necessary to protect the animals from further harm.

This incident in Cabazon comes on the heels of another animal cruelty case in Aguanga, where over 100 animals were seized by Animal Services due to similar neglect issues. Huennekens expressed frustration over the recent surge in back-to-back cases of animal neglect, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper care for animals.

As the animals seized in Cabazon are evaluated by veterinarians, a case will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for felony animal cruelty charges. The hope is that justice will be served for these innocent creatures who suffered due to the neglect of their owners.

The actions taken by law enforcement and animal control officers in Cabazon serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting animals from abuse and neglect. It is crucial for pet owners to provide proper care, including food, water, shelter, and medical attention, to ensure the well-being of their animals. Let this serve as a wake-up call to all pet owners to prioritize the welfare of their furry companions.
