Virginia welcomes mobile bookstore Literature & Libations, bringing literature to the community

Independent bookstores are more than just places to buy books; they are the heartbeats of their communities. These unique establishments provide culture and community, generate local jobs and sales tax revenue, promote literacy and education, champion diverse and new authors, connect readers to books in a personal and authentic way, and actively support the right to read and access to books in their communities. Each week, we have the privilege of profiling an independent bookstore, sharing what makes each one special and getting their expert and unique book recommendations.

This week, we shine a spotlight on Literature & Libations in Portsmouth, Virginia. Founded in 2022 by Kierra Underwood, this mobile independent bookstore specializes in Black literature, bringing a carefully curated selection of works by Black authors directly to the community. As a Black-owned, LGBTQIA+ friendly business, Literature & Libations champions empowerment, community, authenticity, and growth. Their unique mobile bookstore travels throughout the Hampton Roads Region of Virginia and up and down the East Coast, creating a cozy and inviting space for cultural exchange and celebrating the diverse voices of the Black community through literature, art, and engaging community events.

What sets Literature & Libations apart is their commitment to amplifying Black voices through a carefully curated selection of literature and their unique mobile nature that brings these cultural treasures directly to the people. Customers appreciate their dedication to showcasing diverse Black authors and stories, often highlighting works that are not easily found in mainstream bookstores. The store’s role in facilitating meaningful conversations and connections within the community has made it a cherished destination and a symbol of empowerment and unity.

One of the standout features of Literature & Libations is their „Featured Voices“ display, which dynamically showcases the works of emerging and established Black authors. This section is the heart of their mobile store, constantly evolving to highlight different themes, genres, and authors, reflecting the richness and diversity of Black literature. It provides a space for customers to discover new favorites and reconnect with classic voices, offering a direct and intimate experience with the stories and ideas shaping the Black community.

A book that Literature & Libations believes deserves more attention is „I’m Not Yelling: A Black Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Workplace (Successful Black Business Women)“ by Elizabeth Leiba. This book is a must-read for all Black women working in corporate settings, offering relatable insights and guidance for navigating challenges in the workplace.

Shopping at local, independent bookstores like Literature & Libations is crucial for supporting community economies and fostering a unique cultural exchange. By spotlighting diverse voices and stories, particularly in Black literature, these bookstores help build a community-centered environment that nurtures authentic connections and promotes the growth and visibility of Black authors and creators.

Literature & Libations has exciting events, programs, and partnerships coming up this quarter. You can catch them at the 41st Annual Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival in Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk NEON Festival, and Invest Fest in Atlanta.
