Keyamo predicts that a strong cargo industry will drive economic growth in Nigeria

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, recently highlighted the importance of a vibrant cargo sector in driving trade and economic growth in Nigeria. Speaking at the fourth Chinet Aviacargo Conference 2024 in Lagos, Keyamo emphasized the critical role that a robust cargo industry plays in facilitating the efficient movement of goods across borders and opening up new markets for Nigerian products.

Keyamo pointed out that with the right infrastructure and regulatory environment, Nigeria’s agricultural exports could reach global markets faster, fresher, and more competitively. He stressed that a thriving cargo business at airports would not only stimulate the growth of ancillary services such as warehousing and logistics but also create a ripple effect of economic activities that would significantly contribute to the country’s GDP.

The minister expressed optimism that with the support of industry leaders, regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and international partners, Nigeria could drive the cargo industry into a multi-billion-dollar sector that would be a source of national pride. He emphasized the need for active collaboration among all stakeholders to realize this vision, stating that it goes beyond just policy frameworks.

Keyamo highlighted the importance of conferences like the Chinet Aviacargo Conference in forging partnerships and aligning strategies with global best practices. He expected that the discussions and deliberations at the conference would not only identify challenges but also propose innovative solutions to accelerate the growth of the aviacargo sector in Nigeria.

Acknowledging the efforts of the conference organizers, particularly Chinet, in advancing the aviacargo industry in Nigeria, Keyamo commended their role in fostering collaboration and setting a clear path for the sustainable growth of the sector. He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the growth of the air cargo sector and called for collective efforts to build a thriving industry that would boost the economy and position Nigeria as a leader in global cargo and logistics.

Keyamo also outlined the steps taken by his ministry to ensure that Nigeria not only participates in the global cargo market but leads it. He mentioned the establishment of a dedicated cargo directorate within the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) tasked with implementing policies and programs to catalyze the growth of the air cargo industry. These initiatives aim to streamline operations, enhance infrastructure, and foster partnerships to make Nigerian airports and logistics hubs the preferred gateways for cargo in the region.

In conclusion, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s remarks at the Chinet Aviacargo Conference underscore the importance of a vibrant cargo sector in driving trade, economic growth, and positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global cargo market. The government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the air cargo industry, coupled with collaborative efforts from stakeholders, is crucial in realizing the full potential of the sector and transforming Nigeria into a cargo hub in West Africa.
