AGI calls on President Akufo-Addo to approve Ghana Shippers’ Authority legislation

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has expressed concern over the stance taken by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) regarding President Akufo-Addo’s expected assent to the Ghana Shippers‘ Authority (GSA) law. The GSA law, which was passed three weeks ago, is seen by the AGI as a crucial piece of legislation that has the potential to benefit all players in the shipping and logistics industry.

AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim Darke, emphasized that the GSA Act is designed to address issues such as arbitrary clearing charges at the ports and empower the GSA to hold all players in the industry accountable. This, in turn, will help to curb unfair business practices that negatively impact consumers who patronize goods and services in the country. Rather than stifling businesses, the GSA law is expected to empower indigenous Ghanaian businesses to play a more significant role in the commercial shipping and logistics sector.

The AGI believes that the engagement with stakeholders initiated by the GSA shortly after the law was passed should be leveraged to address any concerns or issues that may arise. Dialogue among all concerned parties is seen as essential to making Ghana a more attractive and competitive trading destination and transit route for international trade. This, in turn, will lead to beneficial progress for the commercial trading sector as a whole.

In light of these considerations, the AGI has called on President Akufo-Addo to assent to the GSA law at his earliest convenience. The AGI believes that the law’s implementation is in the best interest of the majority of stakeholders in the shipping and logistics sector and will contribute to the overall growth and development of the industry.

In conclusion, the AGI’s support for the GSA law underscores the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing challenges within the shipping and logistics industry. By working together and leveraging the provisions of the GSA law, stakeholders can create a more conducive environment for trade and commerce in Ghana. President Akufo-Addo’s assent to the law is seen as a crucial step towards realizing the full potential of the shipping and logistics sector in Ghana.
