Anwar commends athletes for their outstanding performance and unity spirit at Sukma


The 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) came to a close with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim praising the exceptional performance of all athletes who participated in the event. Anwar commended the athletes for their high fighting spirit, which resulted in the breaking of numerous national and Sukma records during this year’s competition.

Beyond the pursuit of victory, Anwar highlighted the strong sense of unity and camaraderie displayed by the athletes. He emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and unity, stating that these qualities are essential to nurture. Anwar expressed his admiration for the athletes‘ ability to forge close relationships with their counterparts from other contingents, showcasing the true essence of ‚ihsan‘ (compassion) in MADANI.

During the closing ceremony of Sukma 2024 at the Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching, Anwar was joined by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Sarawak emerged as the overall champions of Sukma 2024, securing an impressive 76 gold, 55 silver, and 70 bronze medals. Anwar congratulated Sarawak for their outstanding performance and „challenged“ them to defend their title at the next edition in Selangor in 2026. He commended Sarawak for embodying the spirit of Segulai Sejalai (Together in Unity) and praised the Federal Territories for providing strong competition.

This victory marked the fourth time Sarawak has been crowned overall champions of Sukma, following their previous wins in 1990, 1992, and 1994. The Federal Territories secured the second spot with 75 gold, 65 silver, and 72 bronze medals. Anwar extended his congratulations to the state government and all parties involved in organizing Sukma 2024, describing it as one of the best editions ever held in Malaysia.

In conclusion, Anwar expressed his highest appreciation to the young athletes, teachers, coaches, and everyone who contributed to the success of the 21st Sukma in Sarawak. The Games, which began on August 17, showcased the talent and dedication of Malaysia’s athletes and highlighted the importance of sportsmanship, unity, and teamwork in achieving success on the national stage.
