Board embraces draft plan for Welcoming Communities

Last week, Wanaka warmly embraced the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Welcoming Communities draft plan, showing their support and enthusiasm for the initiative. Mayor Glyn Lewers expressed his appreciation for the project, acknowledging the three-year process it had undergone. He reflected on the symbolic planting of a kauri tree in Queenstown Gardens when the council first signed up for the plan, seeing it as a representation of newcomers putting down roots in the district. Mr. Lewers emphasized the importance of building a strong and thriving community for future generations, paralleling the growth of the kauri tree over time.

The mayor highlighted the district’s appeal to migrants, noting the significant number of new citizens welcomed to Wanaka each year. He shared his joy in welcoming people to the community, recognizing it as one of the most fulfilling aspects of his role. Wanaka Community Board member Linda Joll praised the Welcoming Communities plan but raised concerns about recent immigration law changes leading to migrant departures and subsequent staffing shortages for local employers. This issue underscored the need for ongoing advocacy and support for newcomers in the district.

Heather Clay, a staff member at the Wanaka Community Hub/Link, echoed the call for continued government lobbying in response to the visa law changes affecting the district. She emphasized the unique challenges faced by Wanaka and stressed the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the successful integration of newcomers. Hemi Cordell, the Upper Clutha Welcoming Communities coordinator, outlined the additional work needed at the community level to support settlement and integration services. This included the development of a Newcomers Guide, the establishment of a Newcomers Welcome and Inclusion Network, and the promotion of welcoming values through community events.

The collective efforts of community stakeholders, council members, and local organizations demonstrated Wanaka’s commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents. By addressing the challenges posed by immigration law changes and actively supporting newcomers, Wanaka is poised to continue its growth as a diverse and vibrant community. The Welcoming Communities draft plan serves as a roadmap for future initiatives and actions to ensure that Wanaka remains a welcoming destination for all who choose to call it home.
