Gilda’s Club offers virtual support groups through Cancer Support Community Iowa & NW Illinois

Cancer patients and their families facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis now have a new option for receiving support. Cancer Support Community Iowa & NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club is launching two new virtual cancer support groups, starting in September. These free online communities provide support, connection, and encouragement to anyone impacted by cancer, regardless of their location.

Program Director Kelsey Allen emphasizes the importance of these virtual support groups in providing a safe space for individuals living with cancer, as well as their caregivers and loved ones, to connect, share experiences, and find strength in community. Facing cancer can be a challenging and isolating experience, and these groups aim to offer a supportive environment for those in need.

The groups will meet weekly online, with the Connecting Through Cancer Support Group catering to cancer patients and survivors. This group will provide a platform for individuals to connect, share their experiences, and offer encouragement to one another. The group will meet on Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m., starting on September 5th.

For caregivers and loved ones of those impacted by cancer, the Friends & Family Support Group will offer a safe space to share challenges, ask questions, and find solace in knowing they are not alone. This group will meet on Wednesdays from 6-7:30 p.m., starting on September 4th.

Before attending a support group, all attendees must participate in a one-time Welcome Meeting. These programs are offered at no cost, thanks to the support of the Iowa Cancer Consortium and the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. To learn more and register for the support groups, individuals can visit the Cancer Support Community of Iowa & NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club website.

In conclusion, the launch of these virtual cancer support groups provides a valuable resource for individuals and families impacted by cancer. By offering a supportive community, these groups aim to alleviate the challenges and isolation that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. The opportunity to connect, share experiences, and find strength in community can make a significant difference in the journey of those affected by cancer.
