Global Health Emergency: Could Mpox Lead to Another Pandemic?

The World Health Organization has recently declared the ongoing outbreaks of mpox in Congo and other parts of Africa to be a global emergency, emphasizing the urgent need for action to curb the virus‘ transmission. This announcement comes as Sweden reported the first case of a new form of mpox previously only seen in Africa in a traveler, sparking concerns among European health authorities about the potential for more imported cases.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is primarily spread through close skin-to-skin contact with infected individuals or their contaminated belongings. Unlike airborne viruses that typically trigger pandemics, mpox is less likely to spread rapidly due to the visible skin lesions it causes, which may deter close contact with infected individuals. To prevent transmission, experts recommend avoiding physical contact with those displaying mpox-like lesions, refraining from sharing personal items, and practicing good hygiene such as regular hand-washing.

While Europe’s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control warns of the likelihood of more imported cases of mpox from Africa, the risk of local outbreaks in Europe remains low. Scientists assert that the risk to the general population in countries without ongoing mpox outbreaks is minimal. Despite concerns, the slow spread of mpox contrasts with the rapid transmission of COVID-19, with vaccines and treatments available for mpox, unlike in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 mpox outbreak in over 70 countries was contained within months through vaccination programs and the availability of drugs in affluent nations. However, the majority of current mpox cases are concentrated in Africa, particularly in Congo, where the health system is strained by various health challenges. Despite requests for vaccines, Congo has yet to receive significant support. Dr. Chris Beyrer of Duke University’s Global Health Institute emphasizes the importance of prioritizing Africa to control the mpox outbreaks effectively.

In conclusion, while the mpox outbreaks pose a significant global health concern, the availability of vaccines and treatments provides hope for containment. Investing in addressing the outbreaks in Africa is crucial to prevent further spread and protect vulnerable populations. By prioritizing global cooperation and support, the world can work together to combat the mpox pandemic effectively.
