Heart Butte School staff remains positive despite transition to remote learning


The Heart Butte School District in Montana faced an unexpected challenge as the new school year was set to begin on August 22, 2024. Instead of welcoming students back to the classroom, faculty and staff found themselves outside, preparing for a period of remote learning due to infrastructure issues with the school’s water and fire suppression systems.

Superintendent Marcy Cobell explained that the decision to switch to a hybrid model of remote learning was necessary to ensure the safety of students and staff. While online learning via Chromebooks will be the primary mode of instruction, face-to-face interaction will still be provided, especially for younger students in kindergarten through second grade who benefit from in-person instruction.

Despite the challenges posed by remote learning, teachers and administrators are maintaining a positive outlook. Davie Lee Shortman, the business manager clerk for Heart Butte Public Schools, expressed optimism about the bond that will be created through this experience, highlighting the community support and collaboration that has emerged in response to the situation.

The Blackfeet Tribal Health Clinic and other resources will remain available to students and families during this period of remote learning. Shortman noted the assistance provided by neighboring districts and the community, emphasizing the unity and quick adaptation displayed by everyone involved in making the transition to remote learning.

The Heart Butte School District is hopeful that after four to six weeks, they will be able to resume in-person classes as normal. The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council announced the remote learning model, citing unforeseen infrastructure issues that rendered the school unsafe for occupancy until necessary repairs are made.

In a news release, Superintendent Cobell assured parents that remote learning would be engaging and meaningful for students, with efforts made to ensure that educational needs are met during this period. The district organized a non-traditional school day for families to register students, receive supplies and technology, and access support services such as mental health resources and internet connectivity.

The community is invited to a Community Feed event where they can engage with school administration and tribal representatives to address any questions or concerns about the infrastructure challenges. Cobell emphasized the district’s commitment to student safety and education, with support from various organizations to facilitate a smooth transition to remote learning.
