Huron Valley Humane Society seeks assistance for 513 animals in overcrowded shelter

The Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor, Michigan is currently facing a crisis of overcrowding, with over 500 animals in their care. This situation is the worst that long-time employee Wendy Welch has seen in her 15 years at the shelter. Despite the overwhelming number of animals, the shelter is fortunate to be in a position where they do not have to euthanize for space. However, they are making an urgent plea for individuals to adopt or foster pets to help alleviate the overcrowding.

The organization is currently housing 513 animals, including a potbellied pig named Cucumber who was found in a field and dropped off at the shelter. While Cucumber has since been adopted, the shelter is still struggling to find space for all the animals in need. Tiki, a „Houdini dog“ who keeps escaping from the shelter, is also in need of a new home. Despite being previously adopted during an „Empty the Shelter“ event, Tiki is back at the shelter due to his specific needs for an adopter who can handle his separation anxiety.

The overcrowding at the Humane Society of Huron Valley is putting a strain on both volunteers and staff, who are working tirelessly to care for the animals. The shelter emphasizes that it is not a long-term solution for these animals, as they belong in loving homes. They are strongly encouraging pet owners to microchip their dogs to prevent them from getting lost and to make it easier to reunite them with their families.

The shelter is open for adoptions seven days a week, with a variety of time slots available. Individuals interested in adopting or fostering a pet can visit the shelter’s website for more information on adoption procedures and available animals. By opening their hearts and homes to these animals in need, individuals can make a significant impact in helping the Humane Society of Huron Valley alleviate the overcrowding and provide a better future for these deserving pets.
