Importers & Exporters Association dismisses claims calling for the suspension of Shippers’ Authority law as baseless.

The Importers & Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has recently voiced their support for the Ghana Shippers‘ Authority Law 2024, amidst calls from other players in the commercial shipping industry to halt President Nana Akufo-Addo’s assent to the law. The President of IEAG, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, believes that the law, in its current form, promotes accountability and responsibility among stakeholders in the commercial shipping value chain.

One of the key points raised by the IEAG is that the new GSA law aims to create a more structured and regulated environment for trade, ensuring that the interests of both importers and exporters are safeguarded. This is crucial for promoting transparency and efficiency within the shipping and logistics industry, ultimately benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

Despite reservations expressed by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) regarding certain sections of the law, the IEAG believes that the assent should not be halted. They emphasize the importance of further dialogue and collaboration to address any concerns and ensure that the law is implemented effectively.

Mr. Awingobit highlighted the inclusive nature of the new GSA law, which now includes representatives from various industry stakeholders on the Board of the Shippers‘ Authority. This demonstrates a commitment to engaging with all parties involved in the commercial shipping sector and working together to draft regulations that benefit everyone.

The IEAG has also called for clear guidelines and support from the GSA to help businesses adapt to the new regulations. They stress the importance of ensuring that the law does not become a barrier to trade but rather a facilitator of smoother and more efficient operations within Ghana’s trade sector.

In conclusion, the IEAG’s support for the Ghana Shippers‘ Authority Law 2024 reflects their commitment to promoting responsible and accountable practices within the commercial shipping industry. By advocating for further dialogue and collaboration, they aim to ensure that the law benefits all stakeholders and contributes to a more transparent and efficient trade environment in Ghana.
