Indian universities equip students for the evolving workforce


In today’s fast-paced world, industries are embracing technological advancements at an unprecedented rate, leading to the emergence of new fields and career opportunities. To keep up with these changes, universities worldwide are introducing unconventional degree programs to prepare students for cutting-edge careers. The higher education sector in India is also evolving rapidly to meet the demands of the ever-changing job market. The Indian government has taken a significant step towards transforming the country’s education system by introducing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) in July 2020. This landmark initiative aims to overhaul the education system in India and make it more inclusive, flexible, and aligned with 21st-century requirements. One of the key objectives of NEP 2020 is to focus on interdisciplinary studies, vocational education, and technological integration, among other reforms. Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, the Principal Director of Symbiosis Society and Pro-Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, Pune, believes that the new education policy is geared towards building a globally competent human resource. She highlights how Indian higher education has transitioned from a traditional system to one that caters to the needs of the 21st century. Dr. Yeravdekar emphasizes that the Indian higher education system has evolved into a robust and large system driven by the demands of the modern world, with some institutions being recognized as world-class universities.

As the focus shifts towards skills and knowledge in hiring practices, Sandra Vaz, Joint Course Head of Journalism & Mass Communication at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, notes a growing demand for critical thinkers and problem solvers in the workforce. Professional courses in higher education now emphasize cognitive thinking and its application in designing user-friendly processes. Vaz mentions that these courses have either seamlessly integrated with existing modules or have been introduced as entirely new programs tailored to specific industries.

NEP 2020 encourages interdisciplinary studies and the introduction of new subjects in higher education. Dr. Yeravdekar believes that unconventional disciplines are crucial for ensuring employability in today’s job market. She mentions how Symbiosis International University has introduced courses in culinary arts, visual arts, photography, and an MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship to meet the demands of the evolving job market. Vaz stresses the importance of programs focusing on soft skills and personal development to prepare students for the corporate world, especially in light of the challenges posed by the pandemic and online learning.

Despite the rise of unconventional disciplines, both experts agree on the continued importance of liberal arts education. Dr. Yeravdekar emphasizes that liberal arts provide a broad foundation for holistic development and citizenship qualities in students. Vaz supports this view, highlighting the role of liberal arts in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She notes that while specialized skills are valuable, coupling them with knowledge in various disciplines enables students to stand out in a competitive job market.
