Limerick Relay for Life: Standing with those impacted by cancer

The Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Limerick is set to take place on September 7, 2024, at Croagh GAA Club in Co Limerick. This 24-hour event brings the community together to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. Participants team up and take turns walking throughout the day and night, with someone always on the move during the 24-hour period. The event features music, entertainment, and a Candle of Hope ceremony where personalized candle bags are lit in remembrance and hope.

Nicola Hogan, a resident of Rathkeale Co. Limerick, has a personal connection to the cause. She lost her brother’s fiancé to cancer in March 2021, witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by those diagnosed with the disease. This experience inspired her to get involved with the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life to support a cause that has deeply impacted her life. By participating in the event, Nicola aims to honor those affected by cancer, support others going through similar experiences, and contribute to funding life-changing cancer research and support services.

The funds raised through Relay for Life Limerick enable The Irish Cancer Society to provide essential services to people in the area, including funding groundbreaking cancer research, trials, and free support services for individuals affected by cancer throughout Ireland. Donations can help provide transport for patients to and from chemotherapy treatments, vital clinical equipment for Night Nurses, counseling sessions for coping with a cancer diagnosis, and end-of-life care through Night Nursing services.

In 2023, the generous support from the public allowed for over 510 free lifts for Limerick-based cancer patients, more than 180 supportive conversations through the Support Line & Daffodil Centres, and over 625 nights of free Night Nursing care for patients in Limerick. The Relay for Life events not only raise funds but also bring together people from all walks of life in the community. It is a night filled with entertainment, themed laps, activities, and uplifting stories, providing crucial support for those affected by cancer.

Rosemary Simmons, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at the Irish Cancer Society, commended the people of Limerick for their enthusiastic support of Relay for Life. She highlighted the dedication and commitment shown by all involved in the event and expressed excitement for the community coming together for this special occasion. There is still time to register a team for the event, and interested individuals can visit Relayforlife.ie or the Relay for Life Limerick Facebook page for more information.

In conclusion, the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Limerick is a meaningful event that brings people together to support those affected by cancer, honor survivors, and remember loved ones lost to the disease. By participating in this event, individuals like Nicola Hogan and her brother Timmy are making a difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer and contributing to vital cancer research and support services. It is a powerful way for the community to come together, show their support, and make a positive impact in the fight against cancer.
