Models affected by BMW recall impacting over 720,000 vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a recall notification for over 720,000 BMW vehicles due to a water pump malfunction that may cause a fire. This recall affects a wide range of BMW models, including the X1, X3, X4, and X5, manufactured between 2012 and 2018. According to the NHTSA report released on Aug. 19, the issue stems from an improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump that may be exposed to water and short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

To address this safety concern, BMW dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield free of charge. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent out on Oct. 4, and owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information. The affected BMW vehicles include models such as the 228i, 328i, 428i, 528i, X1, X3, X4, X5, Z4, and more.

In addition to this recent recall, BMW also issued another recall earlier this month for over 105,000 crossovers and sedans due to an overheating motor issue. The NHTSA report posted on Aug. 7 highlighted that problems with the starter motor could prevent the vehicle from starting, leading to electrical overload and overheating, which may result in a fire. Some of the affected vehicles may experience difficulties starting up due to a failure of the starter motor, which can cause overheating and potentially ignite other engine components.

For this recall, BMW dealers will update the vehicle software at no cost to the owners. Recall notification letters are expected to be delivered by Sept. 23, and owners can reach out to BMW customer service for assistance. The affected BMW models in this recall include the 340xi, 740i, 740xi, 840i, 840xi, M340i, X5, X6, and X7.

It is crucial for BMW owners to stay informed about these recalls and take the necessary steps to address any safety concerns promptly. By following the instructions provided by BMW and the NHTSA, owners can ensure the safety and well-being of themselves and their passengers while driving these vehicles. Stay updated on car recalls and safety notices to protect yourself and others on the road.
