New Director of Math, Science, and Technology Joins Rocky Point


The Rocky Point School District has recently welcomed Kimberly Christian as its new director of math, science, technology, business education, career and technical education, and family and consumer sciences. With a strong background in education and a passion for advancing initiatives in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), Dr. Christian is poised to make a significant impact on the district.

Christian’s educational journey began with an undergraduate degree in biology from Cornell University. She then went on to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching Biology, a doctorate in science education, and certification in school district leadership from Stony Brook University. With her extensive academic background and experience in the field, Christian is well-equipped to lead the district in providing students with a comprehensive, 21st-century education.

In her new role, Christian is committed to developing information literacy, critical thinking, and analytical skills in all students. Known for her motivation, innovation, and problem-solving skills, she aims to foster productive, collaborative relationships among colleagues, parents, students, and community members. By working together with all stakeholders, Christian hopes to drive student success and inspire a passion for learning throughout the district.

Having served as a science teacher at Smithtown High School East since 2004, Christian brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She has taught a range of courses, including AP Biology, Project Lead the Way: Medical Interventions, Regents Living Environment, and Oceans. Christian has been actively involved in curriculum development and implementation, integrating technology and differentiation into her instructional practices.

For the past decade, Christian has also served as an instructional specialist at Smithtown High School East, where she facilitated dialogue between colleagues and district leadership. Her work included participating in the science curriculum committee, aligning K-12 science instruction with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), and coordinating standardized testing administration. Additionally, Christian collaborated with the district’s science director on various initiatives, such as master scheduling, materials acquisition, and professional development opportunities.

Christian’s dedication to STEM education is further evidenced by her research and publications in the field. She co-authored a paper titled „NGSS-Based Teacher Professional Development to Implement Engineering Practices in STEM Instruction,“ which was published in the International Journal of STEM Education in 2021. Christian also presented a paper titled „NGSS Teacher Professional Development to Implement Engineering Practices in Science Instruction“ at the 2020 International Conference of the National Association of Research in Science Teaching.

In her own words, Christian expressed her excitement about joining the Rocky Point community and working alongside talented educators, supportive staff, and enthusiastic students and families. With her expertise, passion, and commitment to excellence, Dr. Kimberly Christian is poised to lead the district in advancing STEM initiatives and driving student success.
