Sarawak’s Muay Thai squad has made history by emerging as the overall champions in this year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024, according to Sarawak Muay Thai Association (PMNS) president Jumaat Ibrahim. After more than a decade of effort, the team secured five gold medals, four silvers, and a bronze, showcasing an exceptional performance that fulfilled their long-standing goal.

Jumaat Ibrahim expressed his gratitude towards the state government for their unwavering support and encouragement towards the development of Muay Thai in Sarawak. He highlighted that this victory was a testament to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision that Sarawak would one day become a powerhouse of sports. The president of PMNS also called for the establishment of a High-Performance Sports Centre in Sarawak to further advance the state’s sports achievements. By improving facilities and infrastructure, Sarawak can ensure that its sports scene continues to thrive and produce outstanding results. Jumaat Ibrahim highlighted the world-class standards of the Muay Thai venue at Paragon Mall Bintulu and expressed hope that Sarawak would host Muay Thai events during the 2027 SEA Games.

In a significant announcement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared that Sarawak would be a co-host of the SEA Games when Malaysia hosts the regional sports event in 2027. This decision further solidifies Sarawak’s position as a key player in the Malaysian sports scene and opens up opportunities for the state to showcase its sporting talent on a regional stage.

Sarawak’s success at Sukma 2024 was a remarkable achievement, with the state emerging as the overall champion after a 30-year wait since their last championship win in 1994.
