Tour of Homes and Gardens to Support Weston’s History and Culture Center

The Weston History & Culture Center is excited to invite you to journey back in time to the golden age of Weston at The Peter Thorp House, one of the town’s oldest and most captivating residences. This exclusive evening event, taking place on Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 4pm – 7pm, promises to be a memorable experience filled with guided tours, a cocktail party in the rose garden, a musical performance, and exciting raffle prizes.

The Peter Thorp House, featured in the Weston History & Culture Center’s current exhibit, „Weston…What Lies Beneath“, has a rich history that dates back decades. The home is also a popular attraction on Instagram, with over 30,000 followers, and has been recently featured in Domino Magazine and photographer Shana Novak’s latest book, The Heirloomist: 100 Treasures and the Stories They Tell.

During the event, guests will have the opportunity to delve into the fascinating history of The Peter Thorp House with guided tours led by current homeowners Maryclare and Garvin Roos, as well as knowledgeable WHCC volunteers. The focus will be on the home’s evolution through time, with a special emphasis on its captivating chapter from the 1930s-1950s when renowned opera star and antique car collector James Melton and his family resided there.

In the rose garden, guests can enjoy refreshing beer, wine, and cocktails served by Baked & Sauced in their 1950s airstream bar, along with Southern-inspired appetizers catered by Southern Belle Bites, paying tribute to James Melton’s roots. Tenor Cameron Smith will bring James Melton to life with a riveting performance from the home’s balcony, adding a touch of musical magic to the evening.

The event also features an exciting raffle with prizes such as a Newburgh Brewery Tour and Tasting, specialty Scotch Whiskey, and a private metal-detecting session at your home. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $10 each at the event, offering guests the chance to win some fantastic prizes while supporting the Weston History & Culture Center.

All proceeds from this event will directly support the Weston History & Culture Center’s upcoming permanent exhibit in the Coley Barn, „Weston at Work“. This exhibit will explore Weston’s industrial past through manufacturing, agriculture, and textile production, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of enslaved, free Black, immigrant, women, and child laborers from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, this exhibit aims to offer engaging learning experiences for visitors of all ages.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the rich history of The Peter Thorp House at this special event hosted by the Weston History & Culture Center. Purchase your early bird tickets now and get ready for an evening filled with history, culture, and entertainment.
