UPNM to host ICHiSS 2024 conference, discussing academic research in social sciences


The 16th International Conference On Humanities And Social Science 2024 (ICHiSS) organized by Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) is currently underway in Petaling Jaya. This conference serves as a platform for scholars and researchers to discuss and debate various academic findings in the field of social sciences from different perspectives.

The collaboration between the Faculty of Defence Studies and Management at UPNM and The Faculty of Liberal Arts at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, has brought together a diverse group of academics and experts to explore the theme of ‘Digital Transformation in Humanities and Social Sciences’. This theme focuses on the global challenges of the 21st century within the international community.

The opening ceremony of ICHiSS 2024 was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor of UPNM, Lieutenant General Datuk Mardzuki Muhammad. The event features four keynote speeches, each addressing different aspects of digital transformation in humanities and social sciences.

One of the keynote speeches titled ‘Reshaping Realities: Navigating the Digital Frontier in Humanities and Social Sciences’ was delivered by Datuk Muhamad Nasir Hamzah, the Group Advisor of Karangkraf. This speech highlighted the impact of digital technologies on reshaping our understanding of reality in the modern world.

Another keynote speech, ‘Empowering the Impact of Digital Transformation on Workplace Occupational Safety and Health Sustainability in Humanities and Social Science Disciplines’, was presented by Ts. Mohd. Esa Baruji, a Technical Expert at the Consultancy Division of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This speech focused on the role of digital transformation in enhancing workplace safety and health practices.

The third keynote speech, ‘Digital Transformation in Language Teacher Education and Teacher Development’, was delivered by Prof. Dr. Oclay Sert, an English Language Education Lecturer at Malardalen University, Sweden. This speech explored the integration of digital technologies in language teacher education and professional development.

Lastly, the keynote speech titled ‘Embracing the Digital Renaissance: Transforming Humanities and Social Sciences in the Digital Age’ was presented by Datuk Indera Dr. Khalid Ghanim Al Ghaith, the Chief Secretary of the High Committee of Human Fraternity at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This speech discussed the transformative potential of digital technologies in reshaping the fields of humanities and social sciences.

The opening ceremony was attended by senior officials, educators, and scholars from academic institutions, as well as graduate students and industry practitioners who shared their research findings. The conference provides a valuable opportunity for participants to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and collaborate on innovative research projects that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of social sciences.
